Once Upon a Toy

Once Upon a Toy is a game created in a team (12 peoples).

The game takes place in a child's bedroom, where he'd like to play with his absent big brother. We'll play the child through his toy to alternate gameplay, searching the room from top to bottom and perhaps finding his big brother.

Miniature constraint ?

To start with, our basic constraint was a room of no more than 20m², which helped us in our gameplay choices: make a miniature adventure on a human scale, but limited by the surface area of the room.

References

Of course, our main reference was the game "It Takes Two" because it best demonstrated what we wanted to do in terms of gameplay and adventure.

A Game for Everyone

We wanted a very simple game in terms of movement/understanding/objective.

During the game, you are guided on your actions and movements: the child's voice gives you advice.

A level to match the rest

As explained above, the game is very accessible. I've made sure that the same applies to the map, so that the player is never really lost or stuck when faced with a puzzle of any kind.

Game design & Level Design

In the process of creating the map, I made sure that the player could stroll along at a leisurely pace while completing the little puzzles along the way. Before the first puzzle, the player learns to move, crouch and jump. Then comes the first puzzle and the learning of a very important mechanic: moving a cube and placing it on its base in order to open a door. From here, the player is ready to continue the adventure.

Final

In the end, the project went extremely well. It was a real challenge, probably the one where there were the most things to do in terms of GD, LD, UI, SFX, etc. The result was much appreciated. I hope the video will whet your appetite!
